One of my favourite types of shoot as a makeup artist is a beauty shoot, so that could be a skincare campaign, content or camping for makeup brand shoot or basically any shoot where the face is the feature. This is our time to shine as makeup artist, where every detail is meticulously planned and executed to perfection, the role of a makeup artist is indispensable. From creating flawless looks to bringing out the best features of models, the job of a makeup artist is both challenging and rewarding. In this blog post, we delve into the behind-the-scenes magic of a beauty shoot, exploring the experiences and insights of a makeup artist.

The journey of a makeup artist for a beauty shoot begins long before the camera starts rolling. It starts with understanding the vision of the photographer, creative director & of course the brand that you are working with. Researching the latest trends, gathering inspiration, and preparing your kit the pre-shoot process.

Collaboration is at the heart of any successful beauty shoot, as the makeup artist i work closely with the photographer, stylist, and hair stylist to ensure that every element of the look is on brand. Communication is key, make sure that everyone is on the same age, discuss colour palettes, and experiment with different products to create the desired look. I love to go heavy on the skin care on a beauty shoot, skin will often be the focus so making sure you prep properly is key. I always exfoliate and massage the skin really well, use a lip mask if the lips are dry & guys give the skin a lot of love.

Being Flexible & be willing to change the makeup if needed or quickly add a red lip in the last few mins of a shoot to get an extra look or throw on a winged liner (holds breath) but its always good to have a few ideas up your sleeve for these last min changes. Attention to detail is paramount as even the smallest adjustments can make a significant difference in the final outcome.

Always check the monitor – working closely with the photographer & understanding the lighting set up is essential, the makeup you do in the chair might look a certain way but then the lighting set up can change that dramatically, I always love to do a 1/2 way lighting test, the photographer likes to also check in a see the progress and get an idea of what the model looks like in front of the camera.

Be ready with your on set touch up kit, always check the brows, check the skin, lips, check everything! this is your time to shine as a makeup artist!
